Hey Samantha, my name is Georgia. I adopted an animal, Ed, known to the Last Resort as Donner, a lab/husky/mix back in June of 2010. I love him, he's doing great, goes to the puppy park every weekend for hours, sometimes Saturday and Sunday, gets 2-3 walks a day plus "play/training time" for at least an hour a night. He goes to the vet once a month (i'm paranoid and like to get regular check ups). He's also on a grooming schedule. Bottom line, he's in good hands. Ed was my first "rescue dog". Previously I had another lab/husky mix named Nanook and we loved her like a child.
That brings me to the real reason I am writing you this letter. Ed was my first "animal adoption" as admittedly, Nanook was purchase from a store, by me, when I was 20. I didn't know anything about puppy mills and I just fell in love with her the minute I saw her. However, adopting Ed/Donner, I realize how important it is to help out shelters and how sad it is that a dog, like my Ed, can just be thrown aside without a thought or care. He's such an amazing little guy.
A co-worker and I take our dogs (hers are rescues as well from 11th hour I believe) to the dog park every weekend together and we got into a discussion tonight about rescues. We were talking about how awesome it would be to start doing more to help out no kill shelters like the ones we got our dogs from. We said with the time we spend vegging out at home (neither of us have kids, only dogs) we could be spending some spare time doing more to help these creatures that can't help themselves. So, we thought, maybe we can just hang out in front of stores on weekends collecting money and goods for shelters. We got excited but then I had a thought: Why not get our company involved in helping these shelters as well.
If you have a moment tonight, can you please call me? The more I type I realize I'm long winded and would really love to go over my idea with you. I spoke with Kirsten tonight, the Last Resort volunteer who assisted me with Ed's adoption, and she said it sounds like a great idea and to contact you. Sorry, I had everyone intention of writing it all but I tend to write too much. I talk a lot faster. :( Please call me tonight if you get this as I would like to propose my idea to the owner of our company if you think it will help the Last Resort.
